I had the opportunity to chat with Actor Wavvy Jonez who will be portraying Notorious B.I.G in the new USA Unsolved Series this week. I had the opportunity to attend the LA screening of the show and Wavvy did an excellent job portraying B.I.G and I am honored to have interviewed him about his role in the show. Check out the interview below.
Wavyy: How are you doing Alexus?
Alexus: I’m good. How are you?
Wavyy: Blessed, blessed.
Alexus: Blessed! I love that. Well, first I wanna start off and say, you know, Congratulations on your role in the show. I got to screen it last week. And from the first episode I saw, you did a really good job and I can’t wait to watch the series every week! So, that’s really awesome and a blessing. Congratulations!
Wavyy: Thank you so much. I really appreciate that.
Alexus: Of course. So, I guess we can go ahead and get started. So, my first question is, like I said, I had the opportunity of screening the first episode last week and I want to know; how did you prepare for this role?
Wavyy: On my own, preparing was just going back to really listening to people talk about Biggie. And just listening to him talk. Listen to his heart and the things that he said. And if you ever listen to somebody’s words, I think you can listen to their heart. So I did that to see where he was. Going back listening to the lyrics; getting into his head. You know just knowing where he was coming from. Although we had great acting coaches. Everybody was really working towards it and helping us. It really took me there.
Alexus: I love it. And you actually sounds so much like him; that’s so crazy. It’s so crazy. I thought the accent was for the role but you really sound like him. So, this was your first acting gig. Correct; right?
Wavyy: Yeah. I did a short film before. We put together like a gig a year or so ago and that really sparked it off. It made me wanna be like that acting stuff is cool but I wasn’t serious about it. But Unsolved is my first time really going global with it. It’s gonna be epic.
Alexus: Lovely! Where are you from?
Wavyy: I’m actually from Long Island, New York.
Alexus: New York. Okay, the accent makes sense. How was it portraying such an iconic figure in the hip-hop culture? Were you nervous? Or you knew that Hey I have to get this right?
Wavyy: Of course, I was nervous. Often Imitated, Never Duplicated. When Biggie came, when he came here, and he ran–he ran his course and left such a huge legacy behind in such short years. So, if you even try to come close to what he did, even when going in the studio, we’re doing what we had to do, for the music wise and everything. Everything was just like, “Oh, man!” But I just wanted to make sure that I did it right. Represented him and his legacy well. Something that his family could be proud of at the end of the day.
Alexus: What was your reaction when you found out you got the role? How was it working with the cast? Marc Rose, Josh Duhamel, and Bookem?
Wavyy: Oh, they are a very phenomenal group of people. Debbie Simpson, Josh, Bookem, Marc. Marc, that’s my brother right there. When I first started; he and I connected suddenly. They all really made us really comfortable about being able to move forward and grow; just do our best at it.
Alexus: Such a great cast. I love that you and Marc are new actors on the scene.I read that you do music. Are you continuing to still–I mean you’re going to get more into acting, but are you gonna continue to pursue your music as well?
Wavyy: Absolutely, absolutely. I’m actually in the studio right now working on a couple of songs and stuff like that. I got a single coming out that I did with the producer. The song; “You’re gonna live on” is dedicated to Tupac and Biggie. I’m into a lot of music. I just want real artists to be respected and that’s why I’m trying to bring forth some really good music.
Alexus: Yes, As I must say again you did a great job. I feel when playing iconic artist in a biopic or shows you have no choice but to give it you’re all. You have a lot of people from fans to family expecting you to come with it.And I know you can’t obviously tell us a lot about the show but–you know–after being a part of the show, do you think what the show depicted is what really happened when it comes to you know figuring out who murdered both Biggie and Tupac?
Wavyy: I’d say that’s for the public to judge. Personally, I’m not gonna judge anybody. But, I really feel like its for the public to really sit down and just go over details. You know to do their research themselves and find out for themselves. I’ve really felt that by the end of the series, I’m gonna find out something new. That’s why I’m not just doing it for myself. I don’t wanna spoil it for myself but on February 27th it’s gonna unravel it for everybody to see.
Alexus: Yes, I’m so excited to watch it unravel. So, what’s your favorite Biggie and Tupac song?
Wavyy: My favorite Biggie song is “Juicy”! And I am not just saying that because it’s his one of his biggest hits. I say that because that right there represents that ghetto kids dream and when they come out and do right by our people, do right by our family and spread that dream on top of the world. When it comes to Pac, I would have to say my favorite is ‘Thug Mansion”.
He spoke about people not having to dress up to be Hollywood but being themselves and not having to look to impress anybody. I really take both of those songs personally. Those are my two favorite Tupac and Biggie songs.
Alexus: JUICY! Such a classic! So, what’s next for your career? I know you’re gonna get more into acting now but what do you have next up for your career?
Wavyy: I want to do everything. I don’t feel like there’s a limit. I feel like our lives are unlimited. I feel like in entertainment–well, you never know where it could take you next. I definitely wanna work on a lot more music, more acting and who knows, I might be a model next week. Who knows?I just wanna keep carrying on and just taking it to the next dimension; you could never go to the next level. So, I’m just gonna take it to the next dimension.
Alexus: I love that. And my last question is what advice can you give to anyone that is–you know–currently trying to follow their dreams and go after what they really want in life? What advice would you give them?
Wavyy: The advice I would give anybody is don’t take no for an answer and being unapologetic about chasing your dreams. A lot of people out there are gonna tell you not to do something; you can’t do anything because they’re gonna cast their own fears on you. You can’t be fazed; only you gotta walk into your destiny boldly. And I’ll definitely tell them to do that.
Alexus: Thank you so much. That’s some really good advice. Thank you so much. I will definitely be on the lookout for your new single. When will it be releasing?
Wavyy: We don’t actually have a date for it yet. But, it’s going to be a dedication to Biggie and Pac so be on the lookout for it.
Alexus: Okay. Well, I will definitely be on the lookout for that.
Wavyy: Alright, sounds good. Thank you!
Alexus: I’m excited to watch Unsolved every week because that first episode that I saw already drew me in. So, congratulations on that and once again, thank you guys for letting me conduct this interview.
Wavyy: Awesome! Thank you so much. We really appreciate you.
